Pencil Sharpener
Post COVID Note: This article was created prior to the COVID situation impacting everyone. This situation has advanced live scoring via Udisc, and PDGA Live well ahead of where they were in 2019. While less golf pencils are being used, the information is still relevant in situations where Cell signal isn't available or League directors still want paper scoring. We still recommend having a sharpener in your bag with golf pencils.
Disc Golfers that really get into the sport will find themselves joining leagues and tournaments. While the guys over at Udisc and the PDGA are working hard to bring us to the digital age, pencils are still very much in use for most leagues in order to keep track of scores. In the ball golf world, pencils are considered disposable since more ball golf courses have boxes of them in the pro shop and on the first tee. If you get a dull pencil, you throw it away and get another one. Disc golf courses seldom have pencils available so players need to carry them in their bag. This also means a sharp pencil only happens if you have a pencil sharpener.
Sharpening a disc golf pencil on the course becomes a useful capability to have.
Various sites on the internet recommend different sharpeners. Testing here at disc golfers edge has shown a unit from TGAAL to be the best combination of features to get a golf pencil point, as well as keep shavings and graphite from getting all over your disc golf bag.
Quick tip:
- Always turn the sharpener around the pencil. This reduces the chance of snapping the pencil lead by pressing to hard in the sharpener.
- Store the sharpened pencils in your bag in either a smaller pocket of the bag or a slot made specifically for pencils. This reduces the chance of points snapping.

Great article. Only thing is I usually have a couple of mech pencils in my bag also.
Great point! Another way to avoid the dreaded snapped pencil problem!
