When A Glo Disc Isn't

We commonly see questions posted on facebook and other locations about whether a given disc is good for night play or not. A key thing to note is that ”glow” discs are not always for night play. The plastics specialists from each company can comment in a lot more detail, but often glow additives are used to help stiffen a given plastic. In these situations discs created for that purpose, will make poor night play discs unless they have lights attached to them.

We did this video to highlight the difference between a full production glow disc and one where the glow additives were only used as a way to stiffen the plastic.
You will notice quite a difference between the two!

Key notes for a good glow disc:

  • The disc should glow bright enough and long enough for you to walk down the fairway and find it. For most people this will be at least a couple minutes (probably more unless you are by yourself), big arms need more glow time as the farther you throw, the longer it will take to walk to your disc.
  • In the winter with snow and night, most glow discs are only workable with lights on them. The white color of many glow discs blends in with the snow in both night and day disc golf. The glow doesn’t last long enough for the effect to be useful.
